5 Tips for Navigating Denver International Airport Like a Pro
Denver International Airport (DIA) is one of the busiest airports in the United States, known for its expansive layout, unique architecture, and sometimes unpredictable weather delays. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a frequent traveler, navigating this massive airport can be overwhelming. Here are five essential tips to help you get through DIA with ease—brought to you by New Horizons Travel, your go-to source for stress-free travel planning!
1. Arrive Early – Especially for Security
DIA’s security lines can be notoriously long, especially during peak travel hours. To avoid missing your flight, plan to arrive at least 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one.
Pro Tips:
- Check real-time TSA wait times on the FlyDenver website or apps like MyTSA.
- If you’re flying United, Southwest, or Frontier, consider using Clear or TSA PreCheck for a faster experience.
- Standard screening passengers enter at West Security 1 (located behind the United check-in counters)
- The following access is available at West security 2 (north of the United ticket counters)
- People with a DEN Reserve appt
- Premium/Premier Access
- People with Accessibility and Functional Needs
- Military
- TSA PreCheck passengers will enter at West Security 3 (north of the United ticket counters)
- Travelers who are CLEAR customers with TSA PreCheck will enter at West Security 3 (Please note: CLEAR customers without TSA PreCheck must use South Security.)
2. Tips for the West TSA Checkpoint
The West TSA Checkpoint has new technology, and your screening is a bit different. Below are some tips for getting through the checkpoint smoothly.
- Once you enter the checkpoint, you will make your way to one of the available security lanes indicated with a green arrow on the overhead sign
- You will approach a TSA officer who will check your boarding pass and identification. Optional facial recognition technology is in-use at this checkpoint. The officer will guide you through this process
- There are multiple stations where passengers can place their items in bins. Immediately proceed to any open station
- All items must be placed in a bin for screening including suitcases, backpacks, roller bags and shoes (use multiple bins as needed). Bins will automatically pop-up for use under the conveyor
- New! Electronics and approved liquids may stay in your carry-on bags, even if you don’t have TSA PreCheck. Remember, the TSA limits for liquids still apply.
- Once your items have been screened and cleared, retrieve your items, leaving the bin on the belt so it can be automatically returned for the next passenger
- After you have completed screening and collected your belongings, you can make your way down the triple escalator or elevator to catch the train to the gates

3. Use the Train (or Walk) to Get to Your Gate
DIA’s Jeppesen Terminal connects to all three concourses (A, B, and C) via an automated train system.
- Gates A, B, and C require a train ride unless you’re walking to Concourse A via the pedestrian bridge.
- If you have extra time, walk the bridge to Concourse A for stunning views of the Rocky Mountains and the tarmac.
Pro Tip:
The trains run every 2-3 minutes, so if one is full, wait for the next.
4. Know Where to Eat & Drink
DIA has great food and drink options to grab a bite before your flight. Skip the overpriced, mediocre food and check out these local favorites instead:
- Concourse A: Denver Chophouse (steakhouse & craft beer)
- Concourse B: Santiago’s (famous breakfast burritos)
- Concourse C: Dazbog Coffee (local Colorado coffee)
Pro Tip:
Pre-order your Starbucks coffee or McDonalds using their app. Place the order as soon as you get off the train and then just walk up and grab your food avoiding the usually extremely long lines. Be sure to double check the location you are ordering from in the app because you CANNOT cancel your order once you place it!

Pro Tips:
- Check the weather forecast before your flight.
- Use airline apps for real-time updates on delays and gate changes
- Use the Flighty app (only available on Apple) for real-time updates, delay predictions, and in-depth flight insights. Also, make sure to download the Trip Plans app for real time updates and the ability to chat with your travel agent.
